CHALLENGE
Simon Fraser University provided the land for the new firehall at no cost to the City of Burnaby. However, the site for construction was extremely tight, which required the trades on this project, including Cascade Roofing and Exteriors, to be very thorough with scheduling and coordinating with the builder and other trades. Cascade was contracted to provide a metal roof with fascia and gutters, as well as wall panels for over half of the building, which demanded full access around the building site during the installation.
SOLUTION
Cascade provided a low-slope, insulated metal roof along with fascia and gutters, guaranteed with the Roofing Contractors Association of BC (RCABC). For the insulated wall assembly, Cascade provided custom-fabricated wall panels with hidden fasteners.
To help overcome congestion on the site, the crew from Cascade decided to lift their entire New Tech roll-forming machine high above the ground for optimum onsite efficiency. The onsite machine allowed the crew to provide the builder with seamless roof panels. In addition, as the need arose on the project, Cascade was able to supply the builder and other trades with custom metal flashing from their offsite metal fabrication shop.
OUTCOME
Despite the confined quarters for working, Cascade was able to complete the metal roof and wall assembly on Firehall #8 according to the schedule. They were also able to achieve a level of teamwork and coordination with the builder and other trades, so that there was a strong sense of accomplishment as the work was finished.
